Digital Enhancement

The use of a computer has dramatically increased the creative options for embellishing impressionistic images and the romantic story. Although only five to ten pictures are digitally enhanced in a Signature Album, the technical and aesthetic levels of the album are significantly increased. Digital enhancement has improved albums in four ways.

First, doing my own digital enhancement and knowing the capabilities of a computer has changed the way I photograph a wedding. Images no longer have to be captured on a single piece of film. Often when photographing a wedding, I see something that triggers the visualization of a creative image. The visualization may not exist in reality at a specific moment in time, but can be created by photographing independent elements that can be combined digitally.

Second, the computer can dramatically change an image that has already been taken to create an entirely new effect. Resizing elements, combining black and white and colorized element within the same image, or adding textures or brush stroking often creates a new visual effect.

Third, digital enhancement can make the mood of a picture more dramatic. An image often has greater potential than is recorded in the original negative. By exaggerating the differences in color, focus, tone, and/or contrast of different parts of the picture, a desired mood can be strongly achieved.

Fourth, the computer is a great tool for fixing technical deficiencies of a picture. I sometimes take pictures knowing potential specific difficulties. A scene may be beyond the contrast limits of the film, such as when a bride in a white gown is photographed with a black dog, or when an image has flare caused by photographing into the sun. These pictures are taken knowing the technical obstacles can be remedied with a computer.

The computer also assures that special moments of the reality story are preserved. There are also occasions where something as simple as the bride blinking in one exposure and the groom blinking in another can ruin an important moment of reality story like their first picture coming down the isle as husband and wife.

Signature Albums are not photographed digitally but captured on negative film. Where needed, negatives are scanned and digitally enhanced.
